Coffee grinders are divided into household and commercial according to their use. Ceramic burrs, often found in manual coffee grinders, are harder and last longer even though they're not quite as sharp as steel when brand new. In terms of the coffee taste, ceramic burr grinders have been found to produce a more traditional flavour.
1. How to Pick the Right Burr, a Conical burr or a Flat burr?
Flat Burr | Conical Burr |
Consist of two flat, ring-shaped burrs lined with grooves that break up the beans as the burrs press together. | More of a V shape, with the center burr fitting into the outer burr, both of them also lined with sharp-edged grooves that cut up the beans as they press together. |
Flat burrs produce remarkably even particle sizes, thus they are generally more expensive than conical burrs. Better suited for cafes, commercial uses, or serious espresso brewing. |
Common in entry-level electric grinders and manual grinders due to their smaller sizes. When it comes to espresso, conical burrs tend to create a grind with better mouthfeel. Because they are smaller in diameter, they are typically slower. |
